For decades, red lipstick has served as a symbol of strength and passion for women, but the source of its iconic color is not without controversy. The common red pigment used in the beauty industry, referred to as “cochineal extract” or “natural red 4,” is made from crushed cochineal bugs, with an estimated 1,000 insects needed to create just one tube of red lipstick. This has left some consumers feeling uneasy and seeking an alternative. Enter Carisa Janes, Founder and CEO of Hourglass Cosmetics, who has been working to offer a solution. After a three-year journey of experimentation, Janes and her team of experts developed “Red 0”, a 100% vegan red pigment that offers the same vibrant color without harming any insects or animals. It’s a 100% vegan red that provides the same brilliant color, with no insects or animal byproducts harmed,” adds Janes. The perfect face of this groundbreaking product is Academy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore, who serves as Hourglass’ brand ambassador. She embodies the brand’s mission to deliver high-impact color while also promoting animal welfare.
