So Ryan, this is the first movie we’ve seen you in for a while – aside from staying at home in the pandemic, what have you been up to? And why did you decide to come back to make this movie? Ryan Gosling: Well, I got kids. So I was, you know, hanging out with my kids. And then at some point, I was like, ‘Wait a second, I got kids, I gotta go to back to work!’ [laughs] I’ve got cereal to buy, you know? But I always wanted to make an action movie. And when this came about, I knew it was the one. Because, obviously, there’s lots of action movies, lots of action characters, it sort of took me a while to get one that I thought I could do. And with the combination of the Russo brothers, who’ve been doing this for a decade. And then this character, I thought, you know, I knew this was the one. How in general do you choose your projects? Ryan Gosling: Do you know who Marie Kondo is? That show on Netflix – ‘if it sparks joy’. [laughs] Did taking a step back from your professional career for a while change your view of life on certain things? Ryan Gosling: No. When I was home I watched a lot of Netflix. What did you watch? Ryan Gosling: I think I watched what everyone else watched, you know, there’s a lot of a lot of stuff. But yeah, I was watching a lot of Netflix and appreciating what they were doing. And having kids, not being able to go out to the theatre as much. And obviously, all of us spending a lot more time at home over the last few years. So just really seeing the value in what they were doing and wanting to make something like this, which is like a roller coaster that you can, you know, ride from your couch. In the movie business, where everyone is telling you to do different stuff and keep working. How difficult was it to trust your instincts and take a step back? Ryan Gosling: I just wanted to be with my kids. It wasn’t a hard choice at all. There’s so little and I didn’t want to miss any of it. And you know, obviously I’m very fortunate enough to be able to stay home for a few years and do that. But also, you know, like, I also need to work so it was time to go to work. How is it being out and about promoting stuff in person after the last few years? Ryan Gosling: Yeah, look it started with this movie, you know, the Russos, all the theatres were shutting down, movie productions were shutting down and suddenly the Russo brothers called me and said, ‘Do you want to travel around the world and do this globe-trotting action film?’ [laughs] I thought it was impossible - but they made it happen. And so making this film, it was great to be out of the house and travelling. We went to Prague and France - it’s been a nice ride. Did you feel safe working when everyone else was locked down? Ryan Gosling: Netflix had very strict protocols. They took it very seriously. It was obviously challenging to make a movie in those conditions, but it was also like piled on to the other challenges of making a movie that has twice the amount of action set pieces as any other action film. I’m glad that the Russos were driving and I just was hanging on. [laughs] The action in this movie is so spectacular and your character seems so fearless – what are your fears in real life? What are you afraid of? Ryan Gosling: I’m afraid of answering questions about my fears [laughs]. No, I love this character for that reason. I always liked, growing up, characters that just didn’t give up, they kept swinging no matter what obstacles were thrown in their way, somehow they managed to persevere. I got a lot of inspiration from that. And I loved this character for that reason. He falls out of a plane without a parachute and he still has hope that that he can get out of it, you know? He’s a very you know, it’s like that line in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ when he goes, ‘So you’re saying there’s a chance.’ There’s something about that spirit that I love in characters and I really loved and was excited to play with this character.
