HOW IT STARTED When Armando Paz founded his company, AMAX Tax Pro, at the tender age of 32, he found himself at a crossroads in his life and career. “After six years of working at a local accounting firm, it was becoming increasingly obvious that the owner and I were no longer on the same page about my future career path with the firm,” he says. “I was faced with a big decision: either apply to another firm and spend a lifetime trying to make partner, or go into business for myself. I went to Best Buy, bought a new laptop and a printer, and set up store in my living room!” Three years later, the leading local certified public accountant and his staff work directly with business owners as part of the leadership team, providing remote controllership, accounting and bookkeeping services to small to mid-sized businesses. The qualities that have made him successful in his profession can be traced back to his childhood. “As a kid, I was often given extra math homework so I would not get bored,” he says. “I was thrilled! Solving math problems is an accountant’s dream!” RISKS AND REWARDS Risk has inspired me throughout my life, inspired by my parents’ escape from Cuba on a raft. I have always remembered the feeling of uncertainty we must have had when we set out at night to leave our home and family and start a whole new life. The uncertainty of how many days we would be at sea before we went ashore, if ever. This attitude has stayed with me all my life and made me risk more and believe in myself. One of the scariest moments in my life was when I lost my job and was at a crossroads as an accountant. Should I start working for a big company or bet on myself. I bet on myself at that moment, and it was the best decision of my life. Much like my parents’ decision to leave everything behind on the island. Starting my business over 3 years ago has changed my life and opened up a new world of opportunities. I am able to work with business owners in a variety of industries and provide them with the numbers to make the right financial decisions to change their lives.
