Physical Therapy & Chiropractors of Miami Improve low back pain with evidence-based Cox® Flexion-distraction Technic At Physical Therapy & Chiropractors of Miami, we use the Cox® Technic to relieve your low back pain. Cox® Technic is a spinal manipulation discipline, which feels more like a spinal stretch than a typical chiropractic adjustment. It is an evidence- based, non-pharmacological and non-surgical conservative option to treat your low back pain efficiently and effectively. The principle is to first slowly distract the spine with the assistance of a specialized table. Once the spinal segment is opened, the chiropractor can easily move the affected joint through all three planes of movement. This is performed in order to reduce unwanted pressure from the area as well as to restore proper functional mobility to the affected joint spaces. This procedure typically takes ten to twenty minutes and is very soft and comfortable. In an effort to distinguish the Cox® Technic from a typical rapid chiropractic maneuver, researchers explain it as low velocity, low amplitude spinal manipulation. Researchers have established a pain relieving benefit of the Cox® Technic. (1) When performed by a skilled chiropractor, this form of flexion distraction is a gentle and effective spinal manipulation option. The American College of Physicians incorporated spinal manipulation in its recommendations for acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain treatment. (2) The American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians recommend spinal manipulation as primary care of low back pain. (3) While research shows that the Cox® Technic is effective, it has also been shown that other common approaches are not as effective. These include prolotherapy, facet joint injection, intradiscal joint injection, epidural steroid injections, spinal cord stimulator, as well as surgery itself.(3) Many of these approaches address only the symptoms and not the root cause of the pain. Because of this, they often have short-lived results where the pain eventually returns. The cause of your low back pain may be arthritis, spinal stenosis, a herniated disc, or spondylolisthesis. All of these examples may be relieved by Cox® Technic. New medical research says that only 30% relief of pain after care is acceptable. (4) Cox® Technic surpasses this by expecting at least 50% improvement in the first month of care. In other words, Cox® Technic may offer you better results than if you choose one of the other treatment options. In summary, spinal manipulation works with little danger of complications and produces improved outcomes. You will appreciate being able to participate in your regular everyday routines again including participating in family activities, becoming physically active, and returning to work.
