Designed by British military engineers during the 17th and 18th centuries, the fortress was built and maintained by African slave labor. Considered one of the best preserved historical fortifications in the Americas and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the complex was built to protect the coastline from sea attacks as well as to provide safety for the island's citizens. The fortress was built on top of a steep volcanic hill rising 230 meters. In 1690, the British installed a cannon in the complex in order to drive out the French, marking Brimstone Hill's first military usage.
