MOKE A Ride with an Island Vibe Words by Ivy Too • Photo Credit: Moke America Originally a military invention for the British Army in the 1960s, Moke quickly became a cultural touchpoint with celebrities, including Brigitte Bardot, Princess Margaret, Emperor Rosko, and The Beach Boys. Created by the British Motor Company and Alec Issigonis, the father of the original Austin Mini, the Moke was designed to be combat-ready --a car that could be parachuted from the skies. While its Army life didn't last long, the open-air buggy transitioned into the ultimate car collector and beach resort ride, seen everywhere under the sun—from St.Tropez to St. Barths, and all over the Caribbean. Years later, Todd Rome, Moke America CEO, not only wanted to revive the iconic Moke, specifically for the U.S public, but created an electric, efficient, and most importantly, carbon-free version that is assembled in America, with American parts. Moke America reengineered the entire original vehicle, while keeping the car's classic design and spirit alive. The renowned buggy is back, but with major improvements --bigger, wider, and stronger than ever! The Moke is proudly produced in Sarasota, Florida by Sarasota- based company Cruise Car, the fourth largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in the U.S. This earth-friendly version— exclusive to the American market— has a range of 40 miles when fully charged, and unlike other electric vehicles of its kind, can be charged in any household outlet, which means no need for a special charging station. Mokes have appealed to adventure-seekers since the 1960s. While the reinvented model is heavier and sturdier, it still holds the original spirit of the Mini Moke. Although the vehicle is fully street legal, it is restricted by law to 25 miles per hour, and must stay on streets with maximum speeds of 35 miles per hour, which emphasizes its coveted "island vibe" even more.
