Taking a Stand Natalie Morales talks about why it's important to see her new film, Battle of the Sexes, and the reason she wrote her candid open letter Words by Vanessa Pascale "It's so pretty —it looks really good," Natalie Morales comments on my hot pink nail polish as she settles into the seat across from me in The Cellar —which is packed for happy hour. In New York City for press, the Los Angeles-based actress flew in from the Toronto International Film Festival where they premiered her latest film, Battle of the Sexes. It's Fashion Week here, and Natalie —known for her film and television roles on White Collar, The Grinder, Parks and Recreation, among others—is outfitted in a chic black printed blouse strategically draped to expose one shoulder and mustard-colored gaucho pants. Her dark locks are pinned up, highlighting dangling, gold serpent-like earrings. "I think it was really well-received," Natalie says about the TIFF premiere. "I'm really proud to be in it. The first time I saw it I balled my eyes out. I was like, I don't know if I'm crying because of the movie or because I'm in a really good movie." With a big smile, she goes on, "I couldn't tell. But the second time I saw it, it made me cry, too… Emma Stone and Steve Carell are so good in it." (I teared up too —it's an incredibly moving film.) Natalie brought her mom out from Miami for the premiere, and while they both had a blast, it was bittersweet as Natalie was deeply concerned for her family in Miami, who were experiencing the effects of Hurricane Irma during this time.
