EXCLUSIVE earlier – but I was waiting for a friend, and I had to make my face happen. Thank goodness the staff of James Beard Award-winning Chef Doug gets it, and we're promptly drinking mojitos at a table overlooking the hotel's pool. The whole concept of DeRod, as I decide to call the joint for the evening, is "sustainable seafood featuring explosive flavors." Perfect for a catch-up session with my pal, whom I hadn't seen in a bit. The chef sends out a tasting menu of highlight after highlight and my friend and I are two very happy campers. The ceviche sampler's particularly awesome because it features a little bit of everything. Great idea, Doug! Promise me, though, that when you stop by you'll have the beyond-delicious crispy Cuban pork belly. It's wicked mischief on a plate – and you'll likey. 11:02 p.m. A quick walk around the block – and a stop at Big Pink to get ready for my appointment at Spa 101. All this while catching up on Cinemax's Strike Back. (So much for going for a quick run around South Pointe Park, which is looking bettah than evah after its renovation. It's a really cool place to break a sweat – I've done boot camp there. And to meet friends both old and new: Locals love to walk their pooches there.) 11:00 a.m. Massage at Spa 101 time If I had a meeting while down in SoFi, I would suggest we met at this enoteca from restaurateur David Manero and share some meatballs and, of course, toast with some bubbles al fresco. The early streets of Ocean Drive may not have the great people-watching of the more famous stretch, a few blocks up, that you see on TV or Lincoln Road, but they are super-charming, too. And with that bit of wishful thinking my 21 hours down on SoFi comes to an end, and I drive back to reality. It was fun while it lasted, and even funner yet to realize I have a quick getaway just down the island, so here's to SoFi. Monty's South Beach is located at 300 Alton Road. The cozy spa on the fourth floor of the My friend now gone, I go for a quick walk that devolves into late-night snacking. I check out the scene at Prime 112, wondering if, say, Cameron Diaz and A-Rod are in there eating something nice and expensive, but I don't spot anyone, so I keep walking and somehow end up at Big Pink. I resist getting a plate of my favorite pasta there – angel hair with marinara sauce and pulled chicken – but I take a slice of the chocolate cake to go. Don't you judge me. I think to myself I should come back for breakfast. That doesn't happen. 9:56 a.m. Meanwhile, the next morning…. I've slept in because the room is just so quiet. I peruse the room service menu and decide what I'll have for my big lunch. I check my e-mail (yay, free Wi-Fi!), and start HBB is SoFi's true hidden gem. It's a no-frills spot where folks come to relax, and the best part is it's not a big spa but a small, intimate kinda joint, so you won't be like, distracted by commotion. I have a special massage during which two lady-therapists worked me at the same time – and I must say that that was all kinds of (unexpected) funsies. I mean, while one goes left, the other goes right, and all my stress just fades. I am sooo relaxed afterward the only thing left for me to do is… 12:37 p.m. Open the bottle! Get back to my room and pop open the bottle of bubbles the HBB left for me. I call room service and put away a Kobe beef burger with fries from DeRod out on the terrace while pondering…where to go for lunch. Ha! The Hilton Bentley South Beach is located at 101 Ocean Drive.
