TECH The Holiday's App-solute Must Have Get through this season with these helpful downloads Words by Craig Agranoff Holiday cheer? Check. Gifts? Check. Family and friends gathering? Check. Holiday apps downloaded? Err… Believe it or not, your smart phone can enhance the holiday festivities. Whether it's keeping the kids occupied during a long drive or flight, organizing your travel itinerary, or pulling a blow-by-blow timeline of your Facebook status updates for the past year… there's an app for that. TRAVEL APPS TripIt: The essential app for the holiday traveler, this drags your travel itinerary into the 21st century, organizing your information into a simple one-stop location for easy retrieval by computer, smart phone, etc. Bonus, unless you need premium services, it's free to use! iTranslate: Whether you're headed overseas or to downtown Miami, you may need assistance translating the area's native tongue. This iPhone app uses voice recognition to translate spoken language and understands several languages including: Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and of course English. Socialcam: Last year's most talked about app has grown up and is one of the coolest ways to take video of holiday happenings. Available on both iPhone and Android, this app enables you to share your video with friends on just about every social platform out there, including Facebook and Twitter. GAMES Santa Mega Pack 10-in-1: This is a huge app, but well worth the download. It's a set of games with a fun little twist for the kids. Appropriate for kids around ages 3 or 4, this iPhone app includes simple games that they can enjoy followed by the ability to send messages to Santa or even leave him voicemails. The app responds to these messages with both voice and text replies (all from the app, so no privacy concerns). Very cool. Santa's Christmas Village 15-in-1: This fun-filled app for iPhone and iPad is a suite of games with a holiday theme appropriate for everyone from small children to adults. Most of the games are kid's games for different age groups and education levels. Lots of fun and great for everyone! A Christmas Carol for iPad: Meant specifically for the larger screen of the iPad, this app is for older kids (age 9 or so) and is an illustrated telling of the Dickens classic. Largely uncut, it's a great, kind of spooky app that displays the story as an on-screen book. SOCIAL NETWORKING Every year, new holiday-themed apps appear on Facebook or as apps for Twitter and other networks. Some favorites from last year like My Year In Status and My Year in Photos are likely to reappear again, allowing users to create timelines of their Facebook updates. Others like the 24 Days of Christmas, sending automated Twitter updates of your holiday readiness, are also likely to make comebacks. These festive apps will help you navigate through the holidays more efficiently and bring tons of joy. Holiday apps downloaded? Check. ML MIAMI LIVING 57
