FOOD Bandwagon and Get Your Food Fix on! Hop on the Food Truck America's latest trend rolls in and tastes oh-so-good Words by Marta A. Oppenheimer Bell-bottom pants, Pet Rocks, Rubik's Cubes, Tattoo Reality television shows, there is always a new fad out there. Today, Americans follow Food Trucks. What a delicious new trend! In the past few years, the Miami food scene has been crowded with bright colored trucks serving all kinds of food. From burgers to sushi, tacos to grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade cupcakes to funnel cakes, there is something for everyone. Looking at these trucks is a treat itself. Sporting fantastic logos, they are pieces of art with wheels. There is a blonde bombshell wearing an itsy, bitsy, red, polka dot bikini offering cheese sandwiches. A truck engulfed in flames promises hot and savory food, and a smiling fish tempts with healthy tacos. Each truck has a distinct personality. It is worth seeing each and every one of them. The people inside the Food Trucks add to the experience. Owners and servers are friendly and truly enjoy presenting their food. It is impossible not to share anecdotes while waiting for a frita cubana or adding seasonings to the miso soup. The conversation is another spice. This friendliness is what makes the Food Truck experience perfect for a family evening. Entire families from Grandma to the youngest kid sit on folding chairs near tables and coolers brought from home. It is the perfect setting to share some curly fries and a week's worth of family stories. Music in the background mingles with the sounds of conversations and laughter. The different colored lights from the trucks give a feeling resembling fairs. Instead of booths with darts, basketball hoops, prizes, and moving clown heads, there is… FOOD! This food is what makes this new craze such a success. It is equal in taste to many 30 MIAMI LIVING gourmet restaurants, but easier on the pocket. It is finally affordable to take the entire family out to dinner without having to take out a second mortgage on the house. Food Trucks can also bring a stop to family arguments. If a family member wants Mexican, another Chinese, or just an All- American hamburger, this is the way to make them all happy at the same time. In one night a little of everything can be tasted. The food is not only good but also fresh — all made from scratch. It is also clean and safe. Food Trucks have to get cleared by the Health Department. They follow the same rules as any restaurant. Some of the trucks are easily recognizable. Anyone that knows Coral Gables and likes sushi has visited Red Koi Thai & Sushi Lounge. The famous restaurant now has wheels, Red Koi Gourmet Food Truck, decorated in the same black and red hues of the restaurant and with the familiar giant Koi on the side. "This is how the Koi rolls." Fried Rice and Pad Thai, California Rolls, Spicy Tuna Rolls, Shrimp Tempura Rolls, Veggie and Dragon Rolls, it is definitely sushi on wheels. A pretty girl with flowing black hair and tanned skin, wearing a gigantic Mexican hat, smiles in front of sunrays and next to green cactuses. She offers Papa Mama (homemade fries with ground beef, sour cream, pico de gallo, and cheese) and a variety of soft shell tacos with either pork carnitas, fried grouper, or shredded chicken among many other Mexican-inspired goodies. Try the Pork Chile, a family recipe passed down in the Nacho Mama's Mexican Grill family through generations. Legend says it was a Pancho Villa favorite. Ms. Cheezious' fresh made grilled cheese sandwiches are famous among the Food Truck followers. American, cheddar, and Swiss cheeses with bacon, oven
